In the district of Antalaya Province you will find the seaside resort city of Alanya. This resort city is located in the Mediterranean Region of Turkey. It is situated about 120 kilometers from the city of Antalya. The city at one point in history was known as Alaive and it was considered by many people to be a natural strategic position and stronghold. The city is located on the small peninsula next to the Mediterranean Sea below the Taurus Mountains.

It has been used as a stronghold by many Mediterranean based civilizations like the Romans, the Byzantines, the Ottoman Empire, the Ptolemaic and Seleucid Empire. Even with all of these empires taking an interest in Alanya its greatest political importance came to the fore in the Middle Ages. At this time the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm under the rule of Alaeddin Keykubad the I became interested in the city. It is from his name that Alanya derived its name and many of its great landmarks.

You will see many of his enduring works when you are in the city. These will include the Kizil Kule or Red Tower, Alanya Castle and the Tersane or Shipyard. In addition to these great sights and many others you will find that the moderate Mediterranean climate, its natural attractions invites many tourists to discover the beauty and history of this city. Besides these sites which have been listed you will find the Kale Citadel. This citadel can be found on a hilly peninsula. The peninsula is surrounded on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea.

The fourth side is open to the modern sections of the city of Alanya. When you visit the citadel you will see signs which lead to the highest parts of the walls. However if you are curious you can start following these walls from the sea levels itself. Right next to the citadel you will find the tip of the peninsula which is formed by a high, long and narrow strip of rocks which juts out into the sea. This rock formation is called Adam Atacağı in Turkish. The name literally means “man thrower”. It was from this site that people who were condemned to death were pushed to death into the sea.

From the Alanya Citadel you may want to visit the city’s museum. This is Atatürk’s House and Museum. Despite the short time that Atatürk stayed in the city, the house where he stayed has been well preserved. Here you will be able to see how a traditional Ottoman villa looks from the inside. Within the villa you will see numerous artifacts from the 1930s. The house which was built between 1880 and 1885 was built in the Karniyarik style. This style is known as the stuffed eggplant style. The museum house can be found inland from the Damlataşh Beach.

These are just a few of the many places that you can visit while you are in Alanya. During the time that you spend shopping, dining and sightseeing in this memorable city you will build a wealth of beautiful memories that you can take home with you. For a fabulous holiday like this your time spent in Alanya will be well worth every moment.
