Despite the heavy rainfall and floods South Queensland is suffering the worst water shortages ever. The region is considered to be in a drought until the combined level of water reaches 60 percent capacity in the Dams. With the large population in the South East of Queensland, after a few seasons without significant rainfall the state will fall under 20 percent capacity. Permanent water restrictions exist in this area, and they were just raised so that the average household is allowed 200 litres per person, an increase from 170 litres.
To the visitor, these kinds of restrictions are not immediately evident but most hotels may have signs up making you aware and maybe requesting that you save water by not having your sheets washed everyday, take shorted showers etc. For the resident restrictions have meant that sprinklers in gardens have not been allowed and hand watering is monitored (leading to many dead “looking gardens), no water was allowed to clean up driveways and definitely no cleaning cars.
For many Australians, saving water has become a part of their everyday routine. Grey water, water from showers or washing up, is used on gardens or lawns. Timers are used to to ensure short showers, and double flush toilets are installed in homes (a toilet with two flush buttons, one for a half flush , one for a full flush).
Recycled water is not currently used but may be added into the dams if they fall below 40 percent capacity again and water desalination plants are also said to be given the go ahead in some areas. These solutions will be a long time coming but hopefully will be a comfort to the farmers who are struggling to keep their live stock and crops alive.
So wherever you travel in Queensland or indeed anywhere in Australia, be aware that water shortages may not be apparent but they do exist and it would be nice if you could do your bit and try and reduce your water usage by little things such as, not having the towels changed every day, not keeping the tap running as you brush your teeth and not have a such a huge bath everyday .These things wont affect your holiday but if everyone does them then they will have an affect long term on the country you have visited.
