In the country of Bulgaria you will find the beautiful coastal seaside resort town of Balchik. This town which is situated in the Southern Dobruja area is Black Sea coastal town. It is about 42 kilometres northeast of Varna and it is located in the Dobrich Oblast. The town can be found sprawling along the hill terraces as it descends from the Dobruja plateau down to the sea front. During its early days the town was an ancient Ionian Greek colony called Krounoi.

Under the rule of the Ottoman Empire this colony was re-named Balchik. Today you will find this town is a pleasant place to spend your vacation in. The palace was built in the oriental style and it is also the site where the Queen’s heart was kept as per her wishes until 1940. At this point the Treaty of Craiova awarded Balchik back to the country of Bulgaria. From this point the late Queen’s heart was moved to Romania. While the Queen and her entourage are no longer here you will find that the palace is a popular spot for tourists.

In addition you will find the adjacent Balchik Botanical Gardens a sight to behold and enjoy. This botanical garden is associated with the Biology department at the Sofia University. Here you will find there are over 200 species of trees. Some of these trees can be considered as living palaeontology treasures. For instance you will be able to look at a Ginko Biloba tree here in the garden. This tree is the oldest living tree and it has been in existence for about 150 to 200 million years. In addition to these trees you will be able to look at more than 250 species of cacti which are growing well in the botanical garden.

Besides looking at the cacti gardens and the numerous trees you will find yourself surrounded in a beautiful landscape of flowering plants of every imaginable hue and colour, rare and exotic plants you may never have seen before and within the garden complex you will find another interesting sight. This is an orthodox church and other Bulgarian National Revival period buildings.
