At some point or other most of us are asked to perform the duties of best man. This, while obviously an honour, can also be a stressful time for a best man. The responsibility should not be taken lightly as the Groom will remember his Stag Party for the rest of his days. My advice is to make it memorable for all the right reasons.
By accepting the role of best man you accept several responsibilities with it. Of course you have to ensure the groom arrives at the church on time and in one dashing piece, as well as performing several witty speeches at the reception. Your other task though, is organising the grooms last night of freedom and if that ends up being quiz night at the local, you’re not going to be particularly popular among the invited guests.
There are several key components to a good Stag event, firstly you need to get the group to bond together during an activity, follow that with a feast and lastly, ample drinking, dancing and night time merriment.
It can be a daunting prospect, organising what has to be a day or two of unforgettable enjoyment, especially since some guests may not be all that competent at whatever you might be planning, so they wont feel particularly inclined to come. This is the reason you’ll be better off avoiding the Grooms favourite activity, and perhaps try several activities, or something that very few people are experienced in. The main thing to keep in mind is that the activities chosen should require minimal skill in order to enjoy them.
Something thats becoming more and more popular in stag parties, is a weekend long celebration. Start off Saturday with some activities that everyone can enjoy and get involved in, followed by the evening feast, followed by controlled measure of inebriation. Then this can be followed up by calmer, more easy going activities on the Sunday, ensuring that everyone involved will have at least something to look forward to.
To organise a great stag do you will need to find several appropriate activities all in one location, or that are not too far away from each other. Some venues do many activities all in the same place, which is of course useful, but I would seriously advise using two venues and a separate hotel to give the guests some variety.
Having your weekend planned so that the higher energy events come before the copious drinking, as you can imagine is very important. Venues that provide events like driving and shooting will think carefully about who they allow to participate if they have reason to believe that some of your group may be hung-over or worse, still drunk. Therefore it is important that any activities like this are carried out on the Saturday, before the big night of drinking so that everyone is guaranteed to be allowed to take part.
Plenty of activities for the Sunday can still be organised, e.g. skiing, paint balling, golf, rafting, indoor sky diving etc. leaving the more dangerous events like shooting, off road driving, rifle shooting, archery, quad bikes etc. for the Saturday. If you picked a good venue, they will most likely run a score board with running through all the events with the chance to win prizes, giving the weekend a little bit of competition.
