Shoes are essential for hikers for them to have a comfortable and enjoyable trip. Inappropriate shoes leads to injury and getting tired fast. Thus, hiking shoes tips should be considered by hikers.

There are hiking shoes tips to consider when buying. First tip is to decide on the most suitable shoe type. There are lots of types available, and some are considering climbing shoes and boots for hiking. Climbing shoes are very light and provides maximum grip while climbing steep terrains and is also usable for rock climbing. Boots are heavy-duty and sturdy, used in harsh terrains but the flaw is its weight.

Next is to know the best time to buy hiking shoes. Others do it in weekend mornings, but experts suggest that it should be done after a tiring day. This is because feet expand when tired, and is a good way to mimic the reaction of human feet while hiking. This will also allow buyers to know how comfortable the shoe is when the size of the feet is bigger than usual.

Insoles are another factor for hikers. 3/4 length insole increases support for heel and arch, while heel cups only add support in the heels. Both of them are not insole replacement.

Next tip is to have proper hiking shoes lacing technique. Applying mathematical concepts, there will be approximately two trillion ways to lace an average shoe with six pairs of eyelets. Among the two trillion ways, some of them are suitable for hiking, and one technique is known as hike lacing.

To do a bar lacing, the lace will be run on the bottom eyelet pair, so that the lace will end on the inside. One end will be run up the next hole, with the run hidden in the shoe, and cross on its pair on the other side. The same end will be run on the next eyelet while the other end will be vertically run on the next higher eyelet. Both vertical runs should be hidden in the shoe. Both ends will be run on their corresponding pair on the other side, then run upwards. The process will continue until one end reaches the top. The lace end that did not reach the topmost hole should be on the second set of eyelets from the top. That lace will be run straight to the top, and all vertical runs should be hidden in the shoe. Bar lacing is very suitable for sports and military applications because the bars can be easily cut in case of sprain and other injuries.

Since the lacing was done in an inside-out manner, this technique can be messy to look at. As a variation, hikers can start on the outside of the eyelet, so that the vertical run of the lace is hidden inside the shoe. Other techniques can be done but as a rule of thumb, lacing should distribute pressure and keep the shoe firm.

Lastly, hikers should do lace locking for hiking shoes. Locks are important in preventing heel slippage and shoe twisting due to stress. One technique is the looped lock. The shoe is to be laced until the ends reach the topmost pair, and the tips are on the outside of the shoe. Both laces will be reinserted to the same eyelet to form a loop. The ends will be crossed over and tucked in the loop on the other side. This locking is not as hard to loosen compared with other locking techniques, but it provides comparably same amount of protection against slips. It is also suitable for slippery laces that get frequently untied while having a simple walk.
