After an out cry from the prisoners, in Tropical North Queensland, they have finally begun to except Buddhism teaching inside the prison walls. Thanks to Tenzin Namdag, Buddhist chaplain, these prisons now have the to option to explore the Buddhist belief, if they choose to do so. Where as prior to this the only spirtual following allowed was Christianity.
Buddhism in the prison system is an attempt to assist those that have made a mistake. It teaches them peace and tranquility, tools that they will need to have when they are integrating back into the general population. Besides this, Buddhism will also assist the prisoners to better handle their current living situation and life circumstances.
Buddhism helps individuals find ways to deal with anger and other personal issues and these are skills that will help them deal with life in prison as well as in the real world. Buddhism is not necessarily about following a strict religion but about finding ways to achieve ones own spiritual path.
Namdag has found that since she started visiting the prison she has been welcomed with nothing but acceptance and respect. Those that follow speak of the message to other prisoners and allow the Buddhism practices to constantly grow within the prison walls.
In addition to her regular visits to the prison, Namdag also works with the prisoners on issues through written correspondence, helping them find the guidance and peace that they need to put their lives back on track. Overall, the prison officials as well as Namdag have found that this program has been extremely successful and helpful to those prisoners who truly want to find their way through religion in ways different from the Christian teachings. This program will continue as long as the prisoner’s continue to show interest in Buddhism.
