Although renting a vehicle for your upcoming trip may seem like a simple task, there is more to it then calling around to get the lowest price. When looking for a car rental it is important to realize that just because you are getting the best rate from one company, it does not always mean that it is the best deal available.
Each quote that you receive is considered a base rate. This is the rate for the rental only and does not include any taxes or additional fees that will be added on. Many times a renter is not aware of these added fees until they arrive to pick up the rental, and it is at this time that they realize they have to pay more than they budgeted for. When receiving your rental quotes be sure to ask about the amount of surcharges and taxes that will be added to the base rate. Even if you are contacting various Budget rental centers each will will have different taxes and different surcharges so don’t think that one location is the same as the next. Call all the rental car companies that will be in the vicinity of where you are renting your car.
This is just one point to understand though when it comes to how much that cheap car rental is really going to wind up costing you. Then there is the mileage. Many car rental companies will allot you only a certain number of miles per day or per week. Anything over this is outlined and charged as extra mileage in accordance with your rental agreement. The charge will be listed as what seems to be a very small amount per mile over, but usually the allowance on the cars that offer limited mileage is not enough, and the car rental agency understands this and plans it so that most people exceed the allotted mileage and need to pay additional fees.
Then there is the rental insurance that will be offered. This is not mandatory and in fact most of the time your personal car insurance will cover your even in a rental. Before leaving for your trip check with your insurance company to see if you will be covered and if you are you can then feel comfortable passing on the rental insurance that the company will offer when you go to pick up your vehicle. This can save you a lot of money on your car rental, if you do not need to take out the additional renters insurance.
These are just some of the things that rental car agencies will try and pick up extra money from. Each car rental company is different and therefore each rental agreement will be different as well. Be sure to read the agreement carefully before signing it. The extra time you spend reading it before hand can save you a lot of time and money in the long run.
