Cabo San Lucas Sightseeing Guide

On the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula, the 700 mile long finger of land that juts out from the north western edge of Mexico, lies Cabo San Lucas. This is a town blessed with fabulous year-round weather, first class facilities and stunning natural features that has rapidly become one of the world's premiere holiday destinations.

With beautiful beaches, a wide range of fishing opportunities, water sports, championship golf courses, bustling markets and a lively nightlife scene has given the area a well-deserved reputation as one of the best party towns in North America; so there is little chance of running out of things to do.

When it comes to sightseeing, Cabo really does have something for everyone, especially lovers of nature. The southern tip of the town, an area called Lands End, is home to an extraordinary rock formation carved out as the result of thousands of years of erosion by wind and sea. Known locally as El Arco, the formation includes a passageway called the Arch of Poseidon which can be walked through at low tide. The whole Lands End area attracts a large number of sea lions.

A large proportion of those who travel to Cabo between January and March do so in order to view the whales. During this time hundreds of Blue, Humpback and Gray whales migrate there from their arctic feeding grounds in order to mate.

The shallow, sheltered lagoons that line the coast make the perfect breeding grounds and also allow visitors to observer them up close. Dozens of boat trips are available at this time of year and more often than not the curious young calves will come right up to the sides of the boats, sometimes even allowing the visitors to pet them.

For those wanting a taste of the real Mexico and the chance to delve into the history of the area which was the scene of several battles during the Mexican-American war, Cabo's old town district, known as San Jose del Cabo, is full of charm and features a mission that dates back to 1730.

Despite its relatively small size the Baja California peninsula has an extraordinary range of geographical features with impressive forests and large areas of desert in addition to its pristine beaches. Cabo San Lucas is the perfect base from which to explore more of the area. When it is time to arrange car hire Mexico has a wide range of providers including many familiar names from the worldwide car rental market.
